Kielwindeweer
Continental Bakeries (Kiel) B.V. (formerly Barkhuis) - Kielwindeweer
History
In 1877 Jan Barkhuis started a bakery in Borgercompagnie. His assortment included bread, cookies and pastry. Around the turn of the century the company moved to Veendam. The family business was continued in 1939 at the current location in Kielwindeweer. By then the assortment had extended to rye bread and candy. In the years after the war, the decision was made to specialise in the production of (fancy) honey cake. The first Groninger Cake Factory, F. Barkhuis, has been part of Continental Bakeries B.V. (back then Haust B.V.) since November 1999.
Products
In addition to regular and whole-wheat honey cake, fancy honey cake is produced in Kielwindeweer. This is honey cake with a filling or a special flavour such as raisinbread. The various products from Kielwindeweer are also available cut.
